Red Rome Apples ripen September through October, requiring 700 chill hours (4 weeks of temperatures below 45 degrees F) to set fruit. Cross pollination is required for the Red Rome Apple trees and can be accomplished by planting a crabapple nearby. This famous cooking apple is delicious when eaten ripe, directly from the tree. The brilliantly red apple has a pleasant, mild flavor, usually bearing apples early in the second year.
