Cooke's Jumbo Quince trees ripen from September to October and require a very amount of chill hours, roughtly 100 hours (4 days with temperatures at or below 45 degrees F.) The Cooke's Jumbo Quince is self pollinating, however production may be increased in the presence of a cross pollinator.

Legend tells us that the quince trees originated in an area between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. When placed in a refrigerator, the Cooke's Jumbo quince will perfume your food and last in excellent quality for months, and this quince is a hybird cultivar that was developed by selections of trees that originated in Iran.

QUINCE...A CULT FAVORITE FIND FOR FRUIT FANATICS

• The planting of Quince trees for the commercial fresh fruit trade has almost disappeared in the United States, and authorities report that only 250 acres exist in the entire U.S. to supply grocery stores, where a shopper can expect to pay as much as $2 each for a single, grafted, Quince fruit. There are some isolated Quince tree orchards growing in New York along the Hudson River that are seasonally offered for sale at Greenmarkets, however, it is much easier to grow your own grafted Quince tree than trying to located one of these markets during the October or November harvest seasons. Quince trees are self pollinating, so it is only necessary to plant one tree in order to expect fruit production. There are a few, 50 year old twisted, gnarled Quince trees growing at the famous Cloister's Museum and Gardens in New York along the River, Hudson managed by Ms. Deirdre Larkin.

• The grafted Quince fruit ripens to a lemon yellow color, covered with a tan fuzz, that reminds one of peach fuzz, and the fuzz is easily removed when completely ripe, A bowlful of Quince fruit emits a distinctive fruity scent that freshens any kitchen air for weeks.

In Europe the Quince has been praised as a gourmet food for centuries, where it is a top choice of French Chefs to use as a prepared chutney side-dressing, topping roasted duck. Europeans also prepare Quince recipes for hard cider, Quince butter, Quince paste (membrillo) or for soaking thin, fresh slices of Quince in a thick syrup. A resurgence interest in this rare fruit is expected from the new USDA introductions of improved, grafted cultivars.
