Ty Ty Nursery began growing the Chicago Hardy fig a few years ago after much attention in mail order catalogs and online blogs created a buzz and excitement of a NEW cold hardy fig that could be successfully grown in Northern States, including Illinois. The cold hardiness of this Chicago Hardy fig has been extensively investigated nationwide and affirmed to be correct by amateur gardeners and nurseries offering the Chicago Hardy fig for sale. This fig tree has been offered for sale, wholesale, to American nurseries by Monrovia Nursery of California.
• Much controversy has arisen by concerned gardeners on internet blogs about a possible duplicity - causing an identity crisis regarding the application of correct fig names. Some blog contributors claim that The Chicago Hardy Fig is a renamed version of the 'Tennessee Mountain' fig tree that in turn was a mistaken renaming by Dr. Silas Harmon of the Experiment Station Research Station in Tifton, Ga. of a bud sport of the Celeste ( Blue Celestial )fig. Any or all of these purported theories could be true, however, TyTy Nursery does not even offer the 'forerunner' Celeste fig tree any longer, because of the new improved fig hybrid introductions that are available for growing by most backyard gardeners. To settle this mystery and dispute on fig nomenclature, Ty Ty Nursery is offering DNA genetic samples to scientific laboratories, and TyTy will abide by the accurate scientific evidence and resulting proof, as to whether one or the other fig name products should be deleted in future marketing promotions. In the meantime Ty Ty Nursery will continue to offer for sale both fig Cultivars.
