USDA Growing Zones and Chill Hours

- Requires minimal chill hours, making it perfect for moderate winters βοΈ
Pollination & Fruit Production
- Pollination: The Hachiya Persimmon Tree is self-pollinating, meaning you donβt need another tree to produce fruit, though planting additional trees will boost yield and fruit quality.
- Recommended Varieties: While self-pollinating, planting varieties like Fuyu or Eureka nearby can enhance pollination and result in a larger, more consistent harvest.
- Fruit Description: The Hachiya persimmons are large, heart-shaped with a bright orange skin. When fully ripe, the flesh becomes soft, smooth, and custard-like with a sweet, complex flavor.
- Taste: These persimmons are known for their luxurious, honeyed flavor and delicate texture, which makes them a favorite for gourmet recipes.
- Ripening Time: The fruit ripens in late fall, typically from October to November, providing a late-season harvest of delectable, sweet persimmons.
How to Plant & Grow Hachiya Persimmon Trees
- Sun Requirements π: Full sun is essential for optimal growth and fruit production, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
- Soil Requirements πΏ: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral, well-draining soil (pH 6.0-7.0), enriched with organic material for the best growth.
- Spacing π³: Space trees 15-20 feet apart to allow ample room for the tree to grow and ensure proper air circulation.
- Mature Size π³: The Hachiya Persimmon Tree typically grows to a mature height of 15-20 feet, making it suitable for both small and large orchards.
Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
- 1οΈβ£ Prepare the Soil π§βπΎ: Choose a sunny location with slightly acidic soil. Amend with compost or organic material to improve fertility and moisture retention.
- 2οΈβ£ Dig a Hole π³οΈ: Dig a hole that is at least twice the size of the root ball to give the roots ample space to expand.
- 3οΈβ£ Position the Plant πΏ: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface.
- 4οΈβ£ Backfill & Water π§: Fill the hole with soil, pressing gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly to settle the roots in place.
- 5οΈβ£ Mulch Around the Base π±: Apply mulch or Weed Pro Weed Mats around the base of the tree to retain moisture and prevent weed competition.
Ongoing Care & Maintenance
- Watering π§: Keep the soil consistently moist during the first year. Once established, water deeply once a week, especially during dry spells.
- Pruning βοΈ: Prune the tree annually to remove dead or damaged wood and shape it for better airflow and fruit production.
- Fertilizing π: Apply Nutra-Pro 1st Year Fertilizer Paks to promote strong root growth. For mature trees, use a balanced fertilizer annually in early spring to encourage fruiting.
- Protection π‘οΈ: Use Max Growth Tree Shelters to protect young trees from pests, animals, and extreme weather π³π‘οΈ.
