Angel Red Pomegranate, Punica granatum 'Angel Red' is a medium sized, red pomegranate that grows moderately into bushes that may be pruned easily into tree form. 200 chills are needed (8 days of sub 45 degrees F temperatures) to produce fruit and are considered to be self-fertile. The seeds of the Angel Red pomegranate are small and chewable like citrus rind. Being a hybrid the seed of course, will not germinate to grow new pomegranate plants since they are sterile. The fruits of the Angel Red pomegranate are juice, and a new possible cultivar to supply the juice companies that made Grenadine, the ingredient for many mixed drinks. The deep red color of the Angel Red pomegranate begins to redden in September, about two weeks after the ripening of the Plantation Sweet pomegranate.

Pomegranates were ancient biblical fruits grown for red delicious sweet fruiting flavor and bright red color. For a delicious refreshing treat just drink a glass of pomegranate juice. The pomegranates were a sacred fruit tree for the Jewish prophets and stone carvings of the pomegranate decorated the top of the door entrances of the temple of Soloman in Jerusalem.
