The Ginkgo tree is a non-flowering tree with absolutely no close living relatives. The Ginkgo trees, along with conifers, were the first variety of modern tree to ever exist, dating back 270 million years. Ginkgo trees become a vibrant yellow in the fall and can grow upwards of 100' in height over a thousand year period. Ginkgos are so resilient that four such trees survive today in Hiroshima, Japan approximately one mile from the atom bomb explosion in 1945.

Paleontologists thought that the Ginkgo tree was extinct, having only been found as ancient fossils in the rocks of European caves.
