Simpson Stopper Shrubs, Myrcianthes fragrans, are native evergreen plants to Florida and are well adapted for growing throughout Florida and deep southern state counties in Georgia, Louisiana and Texas, then reaching northward along the Eastern Seacoast as far North as Charleston, South Carolina. The Simpson Stopper is cold hardy to 25 degrees F. and guaranteed to live in USDA climate zones of 9, 10 and 11 and is very salt water tolerant. The plant can be grown in close planted lines as a privacy hedge, or with aging can grow up to 25 feet tall, with an exfoliating gray bark on the trunk that reveals a red bark underneath. The Simpson Stopper plants are used along highways by the State of Florida as an evergreen hedge or tree and is very useful to plant as a small tree in parking lots and recreation parks. Simpson Stopper hedges are covered with small fragrant white flowers in February that are fuzzy looking and develop into bright red berries that are loved by songbirds and wildlife animals in late winter.
