Walnut Trees

The Thomas Black Walnut, Juglans nigra 'Thomas,' is America's favorite walnut. A Thomas Black Walnut tree often bears nuts the first year if you plant large grafted trees.

The Greeks were credited with the first certified improvements in the size and quality of the Persian (Iran and Iraq) walnut, which are today called English walnut trees, through selection and cultivation. The Romans soon established the Persian walnut tree throughout most of Europe and much of North Africa where they picked up the English walnut tree name.

Also called 'Carpathian' or 'Persian Walnut,' English Walnut trees can grow throughout most of the United States.

American Black Walnut Tree, English (Carpathian, Persian), and Thomas Black Walnut Trees

Carpathian (English or Persian Walnut) Walnut Trees, Juglans regia, were brought to grow in California by Spanish missionaries in the 1800's. The Thin shelled walnut tree, Juglans regia, nuts were sold as Mission Persian Walnuts. California grows most of the world's supply of English walnuts. Chefs use shelled walnuts to bake baklava, encrusted paper-thin crusts with honey and shelled pieces of English (Persian) walnut kernels.

American Black Walnut Trees, Juglans nigra, are important nuts for shelling for black walnut kernels for use as black walnut ice cream, black walnut candy, black walnut cakes & pies, and shelled black walnuts salted in canned mixed nuts. Lumber of black walnut, Juglans nigra, trees is extremely desirable, marketable and expensive. Nuts of black walnut trees can be soaked overnight for shelling into walnut pieces.

Butternut (White Walnut Trees) Walnut Trees, Juglans cinerea, are similar to black walnut trees and like the kernels, except they are white. White walnut, Juglans cinerea, (Butternut Trees) are the most cold hardy of the walnut trees. Shelled butternet kernels have a high nut oil content like butter.

Thomas black walnut, Juglas nigra 'Thomas,' trees can bear nuts the second year, and the grafted Thomas black walnut, Juglas nigra 'Thomas,' kernels can shell out into perfect halves.
