The fruit of the pomegranate was not only eaten by the primitive inhabitants, but was revered and even worshiped as an icon and used in decorating priests robes in Jewish rituals. In modern societies the juice of pomegranate is very important in making mixed drinks and offering health benefits because of high concentrations of antioxidants which are believed to prevent or cure cancer. The seed of pomegranates are still used as food in some European cultures, and as a native plant, the Pomegranate Tree can be seen by tourists as the predominant roadside tree along roads that pass through Albania, Macedonia and also in Turkey to some extent. The flavor of the pomegranate fruit ranges from sour to sweet, and the color of the skin varies from green to white and red to purple. Some Pomegranate Trees are armed with thorns but most modern hybrids are thornless. The Pomegranate fruit ripens in early fall, and during the fall the leaves turn bright yellow and do not regrow until the spring. Overall, the Pomegranate tree is easy to grow in climates of zone 7 to 10 and offers the gardener an exotic, dependable crop of fruit for the backyard gardener.

The flavor of the pomegranate fruit can be sweet or sour depending on the cultivar planted. The pomegranate is celebrated by ancient cultures as a holy symbol of worshiping God. The Jewish culture described their reverence for the pomegranate in the Hebrew Bible, Jeremiah 52: 22-23, by stating that bronze pomegranates decorated the original temple of King Solomon. The Jews also stated that the reason for their worshiping the pomegranate was that it contained 365 seeds which also corresponds with the days in a year. |
