Strawberry Trees are evergreen tree and grow up to 15' to 30' tall, and offer a delicious strawberry tree fruit. Flowers are tiny, white, bell-shaped and pollinated by bees. The fruit is more mild tasting than a strawberry with a touch of mulberry. Fruit ripens from green to red and yellow. Strawberry Trees fruit take a full year to become ripe and can be harvested when the following year's flowers begin to bloom.Wildlife animals and birds love the berries from the strawberry tree, despite the thorns that can discourage the most avid gardener. The thorns do disappear from the strawberry tree as the tree matures and the bark replaces the thorns. The flavor is very difficult to describe of the strawberry tree fruit, but generally our customers describe it as a combination of tastes between a mulberry, a strawberry, and a cantaloupe.
Fruiting Chinese Strawberry Trees
• The rich green leaves of the strawberry tree provide good shade during summer, and the thorny limbs protect wildlife birds, and their nests and songbirds too. As the fruit begins to ripen on the strawberry tree, the tree is covered with red berries and dark green leaves, making it an excellent ornamental landscape choice. The size of the strawberry tree can exceed 40 feet, and the strawberry fruit can approach the size of the strawberry that you buy in the grocery. Once established the strawberry tree is reliable and bears heavier and heavier loads of berries as the tree increases in size. This tree transplants successfully and easily. We practically never have to send a customer a free replacement for a strawberry tree that has failed to grow.
• The fruit gets larger as the strawberry tree grows in size year after year. Insects or disease are unknown on the tree; and for some strange reason, the fruit is not bothered by insects. The leaf production is dense and insect and disease-proof, and sticks tightly to the tree until the first frost, when leaves turn bright yellow in color before falling to the ground. The Chinese Strawberry Tree is cold hardy in many areas of the U.S. and was introduced to fruit growers 180 years ago as a berry that grows in clusters like a red raspberry but with the color and flavor more like a strawberry and a hint of mulberry taste. A dish of Chinese Strawberry Tree fruit topped with whipped cream is delicious as a summer dessert. It remains a mystery as to exactly where and when this exotic strawberry tree was introduced into the United States, but it is clear that a great future awaits this Chinese import. The berries are literally produced by the bushel on a mature 15 year old tree.
