Maxine Grafted Mayhaw Trees are grafted on a 3 year old seedling mayhaw rootstock that was originally found growing and then propagated from this outstanding selection near Deridder, La. Some years the Maxine mayhaw produces fruit that is almost one inch in diameter with a bright red colored skin. The Maxine mayhaw tree produces large crops of berries that ripen 95% of the berries at once, a real advantage to early harvesting. The Maxine mayhaw produces increasingly huge crops every year, and the tree blooms late in March, avoiding late bloom freezes in most areas, so that the ripening of the mayhaws concludes in April. The discovery of this mayhaw, James Eawes, named this fine cultivar for his wife, Maxine.
