he Strawberry tree is most often grown as a small tree but can be grown as a multistem shrub in a hedge or privacy block. In California the European Strawberry tree is popularly planted as a sidewalk tree or as a garden landscape specimen. The brown smooth bark of the Strawberry tree peels off to reveal bright green tissue underneath much like the peeling bark of the River Birch, and the trunk is often gnarled and twisted into random exotic forms. Usually the Strawberry tree only grows to 20-25 feet in the U.S., and the canopy is round like the shape of the fruit. The flowers of the Strawberry tree form freely in white, bell-like clusters, much like blueberry flowers and can turn pink as each flower ages.

•  The round fruit of the Strawberry tree is formed first as white, then yellow that progresses to orange and finally red. The fruit ripens 12 months after the flowers form simultaneously as new flowers appear. The Strawberry tree is especially adaptable for growing in full sun and should be planted in well drained soils, however, it is excellently adaptable to grow in a wide range of soil types. The fruit of the Strawberry tree tastes much milder than the ground strawberry with a slight hint of acid. Buckets of fresh fruit can be harvested from the Strawberry tree and can be candied or processed into jelly, preserves, wine or liquor. Birds love the strawberry fruit as well as many other wildlife animals.

•  The Strawberry tree is slow growing and is easy to grow in containers, and especially ornamentally desirable to grow inside an office in Northern states where it is not cold hardy. Because of the evergreen beauty of the Strawberry tree, you can enjoy seeing four seasons of 4 inch long leaves, toothed and leather-like cover the numerous branches. Often called the "Madrone Tree", The European Strawberry tree is greatly admired in Europe, where it is grown as a fruit tree and is a highly prized ornamental since it is evergreen and very fruitful.
