Banana plants are generally viewed as a Tropical plant, however, since the 1983 deep freeze in the US, when temperatures dropped to zero degrees in Southern Georgia and Alabama, the discovery was made that certain banana tree hybrids possessed a cold hardy character. The possibility was realized that banana plants could be planted as far north as zone 6 and zone 7. The special banana cultivars could survive outside in below zero temperatures, and the banana trees that were now recommended to plant outside would return to grow in the spring and produce edible banana fruit, delicious and tasty. Not only will banana trees produce tasty fruit, but when planted near a pool or patio, a banana plant will grow fast into a tropical paradise in Northern states. Some hybrid banana tree cultivars will grow up to 17 ft. tall during the summer months – maturing the banana fruit before winter snow and ice. Several banana tree cultivars are ornamental and grow huge leaves in green, white striped and red variegated ornamental colors, however most ornamental banana trees do not produce edible banana fruit.
