Wildlife Chinquapin Tree

Wildlife Chinquapin nuts grow in sharp burrs similar to chestnuts but only contain one nut per pod instead of multiple. Chinquapins are also smaller and easier for most birds to crack open than is the chestnut. Usually, the sweet nut of the chinquapin is harvestedin September by shaking nuts to a blanket laid below the tree. Nuts which are nut harvested quickly are eaten quickly in later months when flocks of birds migrate and consume the nutrient-heavy nut for energy.
