You are here: TyTy Online Plant & Fruit Tree Nursery > Hedges and Shrubs > Evergreen Shrubs > Holly Shrubs > Savannah Holly Shrub Savannah Holly Shrub [Ilex x attenuata 'Savannah']Savannah Holly Tree, Ilex attenuata 'Savannah' The fragrant small white flowers of the Savannah Holly Tree mature into green berries that turn brilliant glowing red during the Fall and Winter. Wildlife animals love to eat the berries; especially game birds that noticeably will stagger drunkenly into the grass after feasting on the fermented Savannah Holly berries. Most botanical taxonomists agree that the Savannah Holly Shrub-Tree is a hybrid natural intercross, much superior to either of its parents. Even though the Savannah Holly Tree is known best for its brilliant red berry color, and the berries, themselves, will germinate, but the offspring are usually inferior to the hybrid Savannah Holly shrub progenitor. Therefore, the Savannah Holly is commercially propagated by nurseries vegetatively from cuttings. A mature Savannah Holly tree can grow 30 feet tall and 30 feet wide and can be used as a shrub or a tree as a specimen, but most impressively can be planted to line walkways or driveways and provides exceptional green and red coloring to landscapes. At Christmas the red berry cuttings are popularly used wreaths to decorate Christmas homes. The Savannah Holly tree is salt water tolerant and is cold hardy from zones 7-10. |
