They planted Sago Palm Trees at Christ's Church Episcopal Church there, when they still grow.Sago Palm Trees can form clusters of offspring at the base of the palm tree or the small sago offsets can grow sideways out of a mature trunk, or seed from female sago palm trees can easily germinate to grow into small, slow growing sago plants.

The Sago Palm Tree is not considered to be a palm tree by botanists, but is an ancient cycad, a prehistoric relic of many desert palms.

This large 270 year old Sago Palm Tree was planted in the year 1737 by John Wesley, the founder of Methodism at the site of Christ's Church for early American settlers at Fort Frederica located on the island of St. Simons, Georgia, where Episcopalian worship services were conducted by John Wesley and his brother, the pastor, Charles Wesley.

Sago Featherleaf Palm tree seeds ready for planting. Sago Featherleaf Palm trees produce male and female individuals. The pollen from the male Sago Featherleaf Palm tree can be dusted on the female organelle to force seed production, which can then be sprouted to form plants.

The Sago Palm Tree is slow growing, but large specimens of Sago trees towering to 12 feet grow at Christ's Church on St. Simon's Island, GA., were brought from England by John and Charles Wesley in 1737, the founders of the Methodist Church in the U.S. For containerizing purposes near outdoor entrances, the Sago Palm is extremely desirable.

Palm-like leaves of the Sago Palm Tree are damaged by frosts and temperatures below 25 degrees F., but they may not turn yellow or brown for several weeks after the cold snap. A new growth flush of leaves suddenly appears in May, circulat in arrangement with a yellow-green look, but the Sago Palm leaves will rapidly elongate and darken with a rich green sheen.

Because this beautiful palm-like plant is somewhat cold tolerant, it is widely used as a landscape plant in the South and easily containerized in the North. Large Sago Palm Trees survived the zero degree temperatures in the deep freeze of 1983, however, new growth did not appear for 7 months later.

Huge clumps of Sago Palms are planted at the Retreat Plantation Golf Course located at St. Simons Island, Georgia.

The male Sago Palm will pollinate the female Sago Palm, beginning in the month of June.

Some Sago Featherleaf Palm trees along the Atlantic coast beach are 270 years old and 12 ft. tall with stately umbrella crowns. Containerized Sago Palms require little attention and are perfect to plant at store entrances in downtown locations.
