
During his visits to Brunswick in the 1870's Sidney Lanier, Georgia's greatest poet, frequently sat beneath the live oak tree and looked out over “a world of marsh that borders a world of sea.” Here he received the inspiration which resulted in some of his finest poems. Of these the best known is “THE MARSHES OF GLYNN.” Sidney Lanier is known for his great ability in composing poems and skill as a musician, an expert player of the flute and a scholar in English literature.

During the Civil War Sidney Lanier was a confederate soldier who wrote the famous poem, "The Dying Words of Stonewall Jackson," the famous Southern general who died on the battlefield.

Perhaps the most famous and enduring poem written by Sidney Lanier was "The Marshes of Glynn" that was written underneath this beautiful Live Oak Tree that stands on the boulevard that straddles the City of Brunswick and the salt marshes of Glynn County, Georgia. Because of failing health Sidney Lanier often visited Brunswick, GA., and the nearby Islands of Sea Island, St. Simons and Jekyll hoping to improve his health. He traveled widely through the United States and wrote "Historical Sketches of San Antonio, Tx., and a guide book to the state of Florida.

Sidney Lanier was educated at Oglethorpe University, where he later returned to instruct, and he gave lectures at Johns Hopkins University on English literature, his field of expertise.
