The distribution of the Dwarf Palmetto Palm Trees extends into many Northern states where the palmetto palm can easily survive winters of heavy snow and ice.

The Dwarf Palmetto Palm tree rarely grows a trunk but forms dense impenetrable clumps. The slow growth of the Dwarf Palmetto Palm tree makes it extremely cold hardy, so the Dwarf Palmetto can easily grow in the North as well as the South. Dwarf Palmetto Palm Shrubs are often planted in large containers in city business areas.

The short trunk on the Dwarf Fan Palmetto Palm Tree is rough and asymmetrical in shape and form- caused by burying itself deeply underground. The fan palmetto shaped leaves are small, tough and grow vigorously in full sun and rarely grow over 6 feet tall, although some specimens of Dwarf Palmetto Palm Trees from Florida produce huge 6 feet trunks with fan leaves towering above. The leaf color of the Dwarf Palmetto Palm Tree can be quite variable, depending on the age of the leaf from light blue-green to dark green and the leaves are smaller on the Dwarf Palmetto Palm Tree that most other ornamental cold hardy palm trees.

Several cultivars of the Dwarf Palmetto Fan Palm Trees have been cloned, however, they are too expensive for most people. Because of their slow growth, transplant shock of field dug plants, the clones of Dwarf Palmetto Palm plants are not successfully produced as a commercial product. The dwarf sabal palmetto minor plants are difficult to grow unless they are nursery grown. Transplanted sabal dwarf palmetto palm trees rarely survive from the wild, because the extensive underground lateral roots are pruned so severely that the sabal minor trunk shrivels and dies.

Dwarf Palmetto Palm Tree are native palm trees to the U.S. and will survive the cold winters on most Northern states mainly because they are slow growing and the dense wax covering on the Dwarf Palmetto palm leaf insulates the plant.

Large clusters of Dwarf Palmetto Palm Shrubs grow in rounded mounds that help direct traffic in and out of houses and offices. The Dwarf Palmetto Palm tree is a useful plant to plant at entrances to hotels and other buildings. The Dwarf Palmetto Palm tree also looks great near a pool or on a patio!

A native plant to the United States, this plant is the most cold hardy palm yet tested, and grows well from Canada to the Gulf with no apparent winter cold damage to the leaves.

Dwarf Palmetto Palm Trees of age one or two years old are not guaranteed to be replaced, because the trunk bark has not developed sufficiently to protect from tissue freezing.

Dwarf palmetto palm tree – Sabal minor

In the south, the dwarf palmetto palm tree is commonly found growing as small shrubs and colonies along sandy coastal areas and in poor swampy soils inland. The dwarf palmetto palm, Sabal minor, competes aggressively with other shrubs and trees in American forests. Many gardeners have unfortunately tried to dig dwarf palmetto palm trees to transplant and grow in their yards, but because of the extensive root system that is removed, most transplanted dwarf palmetto palm trees wither and die shortly after planting. Good results of planting dwarf palmetto palm trees can be experienced, if the gardener decides to buy nursery container trees. Striking specimens of dwarf palmetto palm trees can be seen when clumps of small trees are removed from the mother plant.

The Dwarf Palmetto palm tree, Sabal minor, is not a fast growing plant, and grows abundantly in pine tree forests, and in poorly drained lowlands. Innumerable colonies of dwarf palmetto palm grow next to the highway between Albany, Georgia and Blakely, Georgia on swampland, that is under water periodically, and the dwarf palmetto palms grow in very heavy shade. Native to the Southeastern US, this palm grows small trunks that remain hidden behind the leaves. This dwarf palmetto grows beautiful, pest resistant leaves, and can be seen growing as a salt water resistant plant in large landscape borders.
