The intense flavor of the Clementine is unknown in other citrus fruits and the sweet aroma of the Clementine orange makes it extremely popular in Europe. The Clementine orange is sometimes called a Clementine tangerine and it is similar to the satsuma orange from Japan, which is also called a satsuma tangerine by some taxonomists. This hybrid of the bitter Seville orange, Citrus aurantium, came to the United States from Algeria in 1902, The hybridizer, a Catholic Priest may have backcrossed this ancestor that resulted in a tasty, seedless mandarine orange. The size of the fruit of the Clementine orange is small, much smaller than most oranges and the color is deep orange on the skin making the citrus easy to identify in the market. Because the Clementine has a very loose skin, it is easy to peel and is seedless, a characteristic of most hybrid citrus trees, since the flowers on the tree grow a sterile pollen and cross pollination is not necessary with fruit production in Clementine tangerines.
