Banana Shrub, Michelia figo The banana shrub is an evergreen shrub, slow growing up to 15 feet. The banana flower aroma of these shrubs is distinctive like the ripe banana, sweet and pleasant. Banana shrubs are related to Evergreen Magnolia trees and have similar but smaller flowers. The banana shrub flowering begins in early Spring and lasts through Summer. The petals of the banana shrub flower grows about 1 1/2 inches and numbers six-curving inward. The leaves of the banana shrub varies from 3 to 5 inches and grows denser and yellowish in full sun but in shade the leaves and twigs are sparser and medium green in color. When planted as a specimen shrub, the banana shrub grows into a round form. The banana shrub is cold hardy to zone 7-10, and seem to grow better, if the banana shrubs are planted under some shade trees or even beneath pine trees. |
