Mayhaw Trees

The Mayhaw tree gets its name from the small sweet fruit which ripens and fall in May. Mayhaws are most commonly known for making the "World's Best Jelly". Wild Mayhaw trees are thorny but new varieties have been cultivated without thorns to simplify harvesting. Mayhaw trees normally grow near swamps but can also thrive on high ground with adequate rainfall. Learn More

Feasting on Mayhaw Jelly

Many commercial operations are now optimistically underway throughout the South, since grafted mayhaw cultivars are available to nursery growers and backyard producers that can grow the mayhaw in all states of the U.S. and on high ground that can tolerate various levels of fertility and composition. Try growing some of these mayhaw trees in your garden.

Planting Mayhaw Trees

The mayhaw berry grows about the size of a small plum if you plant nursery grown, grafted mayhaw trees.

Moo Mayhaw

Once the Mayhaw was only known as a thorny berry fruit that grew on trees in the swamps that produced bushels of floating red berries in May that could be easily scooped up with nets out of rivers, creeks and lakes for jelly making. Much of this activity took place near Colquitt, Georgia where tons of the mayhaw jelly was sought out by gourmets for the traditional breakfast use on hot buttered toast or biscuits.

Mayhaw trees are heavy produces of market size berries that ripen in May and gathered by the basketful to sell at the Georgia Mayhaw Festival or at roadside stands, where you can buy fresh mayhaw jelly or fresh mayhaws.
