Amaryllis is very easy to grow indoors and will go dormant if exposed to cool temperatures. Amaryllis gardens were made popular in the 18th and 19th century when Dutch breeders began hybridizing bulbs commercially. While, most Amaryllis blooms have 6 petals with 4 blooms growing on a single stem, breeders have created popular bulbs which grow 12 petal "double flowers". Amaryllis are a Ty Ty specialty. Double amaryllis flowers are very large in bloom. Amaryllis bulbs can bloom year round if planted in a pot and kept near a window.
