The Wildlife Mayhaw tree has been primarily used in landscapes as a food source. The red, crabapple sized or larger fruit is eaten mostly by birds but will attract many wildlife animals in May when the fruit falls. Mayhaw trees are overlooked as a classic fruit tree because of the unremarkable bland taste when eaten fresh. Mayhaw jelly, however, has a more distinct and concentrated taste and is referred to as the "World's Best Jelly." Many mayhaw seeds are dispersed mostly by birds and usually wash downhill or into swampy areas before germinating.The reward of planting Mayhaw trees in a wildlife food plot is a tasty roasted turkey. Not only are the berry fruits of the Wildlife Mayhaw Trees used for the world's most tasty and famous jelly, but scientists have developed selections that bear heavily on dry as well as in swampy wet locations. Wildlife Mayhaw Trees bloom from January through March, and the berry fruit begins to ripen in mid-April and continues for three weeks. At present the hybrids do not have specific names, but only numbers, that are recorded by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station, so as to give the buyer a chance to purchase future named varieties, before scientists decide to name and release them to the public. The Wildlife Mayhaw Tree hybrids were obtained from various hybridizers in South Carolina and Georgia and are well adapted to the growing conditions in these humid areas to produce significantly high quality berry fruit without problems from insects or disease. For many years Wildlife Mayhaw Trees were only found in swamps, and many people didn't know that animals ate these treats, since people stayed out of the swamps. The berry fruit of the Wildlife Mayhaw Trees is large, bright red and begins ripening during May and June.
