The White Pine is the tallest tree in the Eastern U.S. with living specimens existing over 180' tall. White Pines tower over even large hardwoods and provide nesting sites and food for many varieties of birds. Because the trunks of the White Pines are so long and straight, they were once used as ship-masts by the British Navy. The wood is also very knot-free since limbs do not normally grow from the bottom half of the tree. The pine needles of the White Pine Tree occur in bundles of 5 and can grow 5 up to 5 inches in length. The White Pine Tree is also called the "Virginia Pine" and the "Eastern White Pine", and it can grow into a huge behemoth, up to 100 ft. tall! A straight White Pine Tree trunk grows up to 4 ft. across, with long pine cones. This large shade tree works well in landscapes, and will attract all sorts of wildlife. The cones of the White Pine Tree are elongated and distinct from other species, up to 8 in. long.
