The bearing size of a Ukrainian Walnut Tree is about four years old. Ukrainian Walnut trees are cold hardy from zones 4 to 9. At harvest time the shuck that covers the Ukrainian Walnut falls free of the inner nut, making it much easier to shell. The shells of the Ukrainian Walnuts are relatively thin, and the nuts are delicious with a distinctive flavor full of oily. In September and October the nuts of the Ukrainian Walnut Tree ripen and fall to the ground, and when shelled the large walnut pieces are used as an accompaniment for berries and cheese to serve as hors d'oeuvres. The leaf arrangement is arranged in an alternate manner, similar to the pecan, hickory and other walnuts. The nuts of the Ukrainian Walnut Tree are formed from insignificant looking green flowers, male and female, that are wind pollinated, and the Ukrainian Walnut Trees prefer a soil pH that is less acid than most nut trees thrive in--about pH 6 to 8.
