The Slash Pine is a southeastern pine which prefers humid climates, and both the cones and the needles of the Slash Pine are smaller than those of the Longleaf Pine but large then those of the Loblolly Pine. The cone of the Slash Pine has very sharp spikes to protect them from turkeys and squirrels which love to eat the seeds. This valuable Pine Tree is best known as a fast growing tree for lumber that matures in only 30 years as compared to 100 years for the long leaf pine.
