Pond Cypress Tree
The Pond Cypress helps create a very unique habitat for wildlife. Pond Cypress Trees tend to grow in between the deep, wet, nutrient rich swamp and the damp, nutrient poor prairie. This area between two extremes attracts wildlife from both regions. A Pond Cypress Tree usually is smaller than a Bald Cypress but can withstand more abrupt changes in environmental and water conditions.The wood is resistant to decay and is important in boat and greenhouse construction, and was once in high demand for fence posts and roofing shingles. Pond Cypress knees look like roots rising out of the ground. The root structure of the Pond Cypress is beautiful and will develop "cypress knees" which grow upward from the damp ground.Shade trees offer wildlife deer protection, shade, and convenient food from tasty leaves, seed, and seedpods during most of the growing season. Pond Cypress trees are often found growing in mud covered by several feet of water. The leaves of this tree are like small green threads that turn copper- yellow in the winter and fall to the ground. This tree is native to the U.S. and prominently grows throughout the southeast.
