The Mugo Pine is a very cold hardy tree which grows much like a shrub, reaching only 10 feet in height. The needles of the Mugo Pine hold to the tree making this pine excellent for both privacy screens and animal nesting. Mugo Pine Trees are best suited to well drained soil and need full sun. Squirrels and songbirds hide amongst the green needles of the large, evergreen Pine Trees, and the needles of the Mugo Pine Tree remain on the tree for 4 years or more.
Songbirds love to make their nests in the branches of the Mugo Pine Trees. In the Swiss Alps, the Mugo Pine Tree is not damaged by sub-zero temperatures. The Mugo Pine Tree does not shade out lower branches like other species of pine. Because of this, it provides a great hiding place for wildlife.
