Basjoo Cold Hardy Banana Tree
Even though the Basjoo Banana Tree does not produce edible fruit, it does form a a nice patio or pool specimen. This plant grows slower thank most other TyTy banana trees and a characteristic pink midrib appears on top of the leaf. The Basjoo Banana Tree introduction has been relatively new to the plant industry, and it has been claimed by some mail-order companies to be the most cold hardy banana, however TyTy has found several other edible banana cultivars to exceed the survival of the Basjoo banana in the extreme cold temperatures of the South and West. The very humid air in the Southeast could be a determining factor in this discrepancy. A dense planting of the Basjoo banana trees can form a great privacy background. The Basjoo banana tree does rather well as a potted plant and can be moved indoors and kept near a window in the winter. The Basjoo banana tree is very popular on most mail order sites, however, it is generally marketed in tiny pots, and the plants are sluggish when planted as small tissue grown seedlings, and rarely attain any appreciable size when compared to the giant field grown specimens offered to buy by TyTy Nursery.
